Wow the “The Winter Challenge” held at Zwartkops Raceway on the 9th of June was a challenge of note and I am sad to report that the day came to a head-on collision at the start of heat one. This occurred after a reasonable qualifier the day before in 4th place in Class B and all within .5 of seconds of each other.
The day was going to be a humdinger with the Endurance series being part of the day, this meant we started our first race at 8,30am, which, as you will appreciate considering the temperatures of late, the track was cold. Having only had a discussion with Wayne Master, a seasoned veteran the night before, highlighting in our wisdom the fact that so many incidents happen in our series on the 1st lap due to cold tyres and especially the new guys spinning out after the start.
Well, this bit me in the butt as on lap 2 I tried a tight move in turn 2 and needless to say the tyres weren’t hot enough and the backend spun around – the rest is history as the car on my tail had no option but to hit me head on.
Fortunately with a Hans device and solid roll cage I walked away uninjured with only damage to the car which I hope is repairable and in time for the next race or we will need to use the Shield Green Mamba at Red Star.
